Yoga Sutra Course Choices - Picking the Right One
If you are a student of yoga sutra already no doubt you are already experiencing the many benefits of this spiritual exercise regime. Becoming a teacher has many benefits including being paid to do the classes that you already love, earning a great living from it, and passing on the many benefits of yoga to people in your local area.
There is really no limit to the kind of career that you can have as an instructor. It is all greatly dependent on the kind of course that you choose to become educated as a trainer.
Before I discuss course criteria I need to emphasize why registration is no longer enough as a teacher. There are serious legal implications with just being registered. It doesn’t give you the sort of legal protection that you must have as an instructor. Also it makes it difficult to obtain liability insurance. There are some employers who won’t even hire you unless you are appropriately certified.
Now there are a number of options available to you. I will discuss with you the pros and cons of each of these.
The first option is actually attending a school. The pros of this method is that you will learn most everything you need to know quickly. The cons are, firstly, that some schools may cost thousands of dollars. Also if you are in other employment you may either have to take leave or to resign to be able to attend. Thirdly, there is generally no guarantee that you will find employment at the end of the program.
The second option which is the most preferred option for people is a home study course. The pros of a home study program are that, firstly, you can do the course at your own pace in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Secondly, you don’t have to take any time off work to attend. Thirdly, they are the much more affordable option compared to attending a school.
There is another option which I really don’t recommend at all if you are looking to become a professional yoga teacher and that’s weekend workshops. While you are able to learn a lot in a weekend it doesn’t cover nearly enough and you will usually end up forking out money for the working workshop and then another appropriate comprehensive course because it just doesn’t cover all the information that you need.
Now as I have stated above, a home study course is really the most preferred option. When looking for a yoga sutra home study course there are certain criteria that it must have:
1. Money Back Guarantee - the owner of the program should believe in the quality of the program enough to stand behind it.
2. High level of customer support - some courses send you the material and leave you on your own for the duration of the program. Assume that you will have questions that you will want answered. The ideal level of support is unlimited telephone and email support.
3. 200 Hours Minimum Requirement - there is a minimum requirement of 200 hours. If you are paying money for a program anyway get the most comprehensive one that you can. You will be glad you did at the end of the road.
4. Absolutely Everything Must Be Covered In The Course - make sure the course covers everything you need to know about yoga plus how to market your business and network, ethics, working with different socio demographics like children and seniors and comprehensive business development.
5. Prevention Of Injuries Covered In Detail - to avoid any kind of potential lawsuits or student injuries it is critical that you know everything there is to know about injury prevention.
6. Any Hidden Charges - unfortunately some courses are not as upfront as they should be in the fees charged for their programs. That’s why you must have a full understanding of all the costs involved before you make a commitment.
7. The Certifying Body Is More Than A Diploma Warehouse - unfortunately some certifying bodies are just that. They don’t have any specialized knowledge in yoga at all.
