If you are a person who is looking for a fun way to get into shape you should take a look at power yoga. I tried many different programs from Pilates classes to aerobics and everything in between but nothing really worked. Then I saw an ad for Prana power yoga. What Is Core Power Yoga?

Core power yoga is based on power yoga, which is in turn based on the Ashtanga style of yoga. This style is a vigorous form of yoga that is meant to give you a full body workout improving your strength and flexibility at the same time. Core power yoga heals and stimulates the body and mind through meditation and intense exercise.

How Does Core Power Yoga Work?

Core power yoga works through three different levels. The first is the physical level that focuses on developing your endurance as well as flexibility. This first level is a combination of intense workouts and extreme stretches. The second level uses mental power to focus your will and desire. Meditation and other methods are used to tune your mind and keep it sharp. The third level is the spiritual level, which supports the first two. Exercises in core power yoga seek to strengthen all three of these areas.

The style comes from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, an acclaimed Ashtanga yoga instructor whose style was brought and adopted in the U.S. as power yoga. Within this style are three basic programs. The first, called core power yoga is designed to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles. This program includes elements of Vinyasa, or the more commonly known yoga, for increasing muscle tone and flexibility. The next program, unlocking athletic power, will develop strength and focuses on abs, back, hips and pelvis. The third and final program is soul of strength and this is a fast moving power yoga program with an emphasis on your mind as well as body. This last program has some extremely challenging moves in it and is not for the novice or weak yoga student.

Most of these exercises are done within a heated room and focus on developing strength, endurance, as well as improving the ability to concentrate, release stress and tensions while eliminating toxins through heaving sweating. The Palm Press Position

A great exercise you can do to relieve stress is the palm press position. You don’t need extensive yoga lessons to perform this simple position. First sit on the floor. Sit with your legs crossed, one tucked inside touching the inner thigh of the other leg and the other on the outside on top of your inner leg’s ankle.

Press your palms together with your elbows 90 degrees from the floor. A straight line should extend from each of your elbows to the ground. Inhale deeply and twist to the right, the twist should come from your core not your neck or shoulders. Twist so that you can see over your right shoulder. Hold your breath and count to three while in this position.

Then exhale and twist to the left and hold for another three seconds. Then inhale and come back to the starting position. Start all over again but this time you should start from the left. Repeat this position so that you have completed two twists on each side. You should feel more relaxed in your spine and core.

Upward Arms

Yoga positions for beginners are often seemingly simple but they do a good job of laying foundations for more complex positions. Another great position you can learn without many yoga lessons is an upward arm stretch. Start as in the same position as the palm press position.

Raise your arms into the air. As you bring them down bend your elbows and clasp your hands behind your head and keep the elbows bent. You should now bend your elbows backwards and feel all your muscles working.

Then inhale and raise your arms upwards and clasp your hands so that your palms are facing upwards. Now exhale and bring your arms down and clasp your hands behind your head again. Do this three more time. These easy yoga lessons will help you feel better whenever you start to stress.

To do this you need to be able to clear your mind of all the usual anxieties and day-to-day thoughts to concentrate merely on your breathing.

There are many easy yoga poses that you should learn as part of a yoga basics introduction. These yoga basics will help you to meditate more easily and will also help you to start your exploration of yoga gently.

Basic Meditation

When you learn yoga basics they might strike you as not very athletic but their benefits are amazing and they will do wonders for a tired mind and body. The Siddhasana is a great pose to start your yoga basics introduction, as it will help you to meditate. First sit on your yoga mat with your buttocks firmly on your mat. Next cross your legs and place one leg on the inside touching your inner thigh. The other leg is on the outside touching the ankle of the inner leg.

When it comes to the hands you have several choices for these yoga basics. You can either place your hands in your lap with the palms facing up or down, or you can place your hands on your knees. If you want to try a hand mudra, place your hands on your knees with your palms facing upwards. Then touch your thumb to your pointer finer with the other three fingers stretched outwards.

In yoga lessons you will learn that this is a key way to meditate. The mudra is a powerful position for your hands as it represents the past, present and future. Think of this pose as a great way to stretch out your whole body. Press your hips into the ground while stretching your spine up towards the ceiling, right to the crown of your head.

You want to be very relaxed so make sure that there is no tension in your face, jaw or shoulders. Your tongue should rest gently behind your front teeth, just touching the roof of your mouth. Keep breathing deeply and hold this position as long as you feel comfortable. You will help lengthen your spine and will also find a lot of inner peace with this pose as you empty out your mind in this pose.
